ISTIQLAL party was formed on 30-07-2000 at lahore.Syed Manzoor Ali
Gillani was eleced first leader of the party,previously he struggled for
democracy under the leadership of Air Marshal Muhammad Asghar Khan in
Tehrik - i - Istiqlal since march-1970. Manzoor Gillani was ceneral
sect. information with Asghar Khan when Mr. Perviz Musharaf took over on
12-10-1999.On 14-10-1999 Mr. Asghar Khan announced
his support to General Musharaf which was against the norms of
Democracy and political struggle.Manzoor Gillani registered his protest
in the party and wrote an open letter to Air Marshal Asghar Khan in
which he demanded that Umar Asghar Khan immidiately resign from the
cabnit of Mushfraf either Asghar Khan should resign from the party
leadership in the better interest of the party. In the result,Manzoor
Gillani and his comrades namely (Manzoor Bhatti, Hafiz-o-deen Dehlwi,
Zahid Meer) were osted from the Tehrik - i - Istiqlal on 15-07-2000.
After this the meeting of the National Council of Tehrik - i -Istiqlal was summend at Lahore on 30-07-2000 (A.D). In this meeting the version of the Air Marshal Asghar khan was rejected and Syed Manzoor Ali Gillani was eleced party President. On the suggestion of Manzoor Gillani party name was changed as ISTIQLAL PARTY.
Istiqlal party formally made request for the joining of political alliance ( Grand Democratic Alliance) which was accepted unanimously. Istiqlal party is the founder member of Alliance for Restoration of Democracy ( A.R.D. ). Manzoor Gillani was nominated joint secretory of A.R.D. by the Nwabzada Nasurallah khan The President of A.R.D. Istiqlal party fully participated in the moment under the umbrella of A.R.D. Manzoor Gillani Chairman Istiqlal Party is one of the signatories of Charter of Democracy ( C.O.D.). Manzoor Gillani also attended All Parties Conference ( A.P.C ) held in london on 07 to 08-July-2007 along with Mian Irfan Akram ( Secretry General ), On 10-July-2007 meeting was attended on the residence of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto with the other leaders of A.R.D. .
Two member delegation of the Istiqlal party attended the meeting held on 11-07-2007 in which Mr Nawaz Sarif announced multi-party political alliance namely All Parties Democratic Moment (A.P.D.M.). The Twelve members steering committee including Manzoor Gillani was announced in London under the convineiership of Raja Zafr-ul-Haq. Istiqlal party believes in Democracy, Peace and Prosperity. Istiqlal party never compromised their basic Principles. Members of The Party gave many sacrifices for the restoration of Democracy. Party members also contributed valuable support to the Lawyer`s Movement and still struggling for the basic rights of people of PAKISTAN.
